In collaboration between the family of Jehan Alain and the Association Jehan Alain, based in Romainmôtier (Switzerland), the publication of following documents is aimed to give public access to a collection of original manuscripts of Jehan Alain's organ works, thus allowing musicians, beyond the existing editions and other publications, to conduct a personal study of these sources.
The present form of publication has been selected because of the easiness and speed of access, and the possibility to complete the collection any time in the future.
The present publication is exclusively dedicated to personal study and excludes any commercial use of the material. Any kind of reproduction, even partial, is prohibited without previously obtaining permission from the owners of the material. Neither the Association Jehan Alain, nor the Alain family, are legally responsible for unauthorized use of the documents. The owners of the manuscripts have the right to take legal action against trespassers.
The comprehension and understanding of the documents and the use which may be made of them, remain the user's personal responsability. Out of respect for the composer, his family and his friends, any polemic action based on the documents should be avoided. The sources disclosed here cannot be questioned ; neither the good will and sincerity of those who have agreed to let them be published.
Introduction (Aurélie Decourt)
Structure of the publication (Denis Alain)
The publication consists of two main parts :
1. Detailed listing of the manuscripts, giving access to the fac-simile
2. A series of numeric files, pictures of the manuscripts
For technical reasons, and in the perspective of later additions or improvements, the picture files are not recorded on the base of opus numbers, but each physical manuscript has been attributed a voluntary number. This allows every object to be identified, whether or not it is related to an opus number : complete scores or project, or any interesting item related to the manuscripts.
Marking of the picture files of the HA-Fonds (Alain heirs) (File Tag, column 1)
N.B. : These markings are voluntary and have been assigned by Denis Alain according to the requirements of a systematic numerisation of the documents as physical objects of any kind.
They consist of a letter (category of the document), followed by a number of 2 or 3 figures, inside the given category, and have normally been designated in the order of the physical objects during the work of archivation (March 2014).
Since this lists are extractions of the organ works from the complete inventary of the JA manuscripts, the numberings are not consistent and gaps may appear.
Categories of documents :
C : catalogues, diplomas, class pictures
N : notebooks 1 to 9 (in these notebooks, JA copied the pieces which he found satisfactory)
P : isolated scores
T : transcriptions
U : fragments and projects
X : unclassified documents

Numbering JA 2015 (column 5)
It was initiated by JA himself from 1929 to the end of 1938. The chronology is not always exactly respected, especially in the last years, and pieces composed after the last redaction (October 1938) are not included.
The author, who probably was short of time, has accidentally skipped the numbers 102 to 111, and the autographic numbering stops at Nr 128.
Most of the numbers are written with a thick pencil directly on the manuscripts and are from the hand of Jehan Alain. Later, several well intentioned persons tried to emend them, using unhomogenous additions (bis, ter, A bis, etc.) and for this reason, the various lists differ one from another.
Whatever the situation may be, JA's numbering, even if not perfect, should be used again. This is the case here, with following rules :
- The number part with 3 figures is unchanged.
- The various versions or variants bear an additional mark :
for the autographs, a figure (-2 ; -3 ; etc., instead of bis, ter, etc.)
for the non-autographs, a letter (-A : -B ; -C ; usw.)
It is understood that the first version always is supposed to be marked with -1.
The mention « n.a. » in this column means « non applicable » (not by JA).
Numbering M(arie)C(laire)A(lain) 2003 (column 6)
The numbers are the ones found in the JA-catalogue made by MCA, which has been re-used in many other publications and also on the Jehan Alain webpage.
Numbering AWV (Alain-Werk-Verzeichnis) (column 16)
These numbers are the numbers used in Helga Schauerte's catalogue in Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG) of 1999, taken from the 1985 catalogue in the magazine L'Orgue, special issue Jehan Alain.
Files of the manuscripts
1. Description-inventary of the manuscripts, in the order of the « file tag ». This file is an excerpt from the general inventary of the Fonds, which explains the gaps in the numbering.
2. Inversed inventary, the same file put in the order of the opus numbers (JA…).
3. Summary of the manuscript files, a picture file giving access to the corresponding fac-simile.
Access to the manuscripts is granted upon payment of a donation of at least CHF 10 (€ 10).
As soon as payment is completed, you will receive your personal and incommunicable password, valid for one year.
